It is the last village in the valley: the road ends here, and beyond it there are only alpine pastures, glaciers and the Swiss border at the Monte Moro Pass. From the Piedimulera exit on the expressway to Domodossola it is about 28 km of valley road; Milan is about 145 km away and Turin about 195 km. The nearest airport is Milan Malpensa, about 107 km away.

Macugnaga is not one village but a string of hamlets along the Anza stream: Pestarena, Borca, Staffa (the main hamlet, with the town hall) and Pecetto, plus smaller clusters such as Isella and Fornarelli. About 500 people live here. It is a Walser village: German-speaking settlers arrived from Saas, in Switzerland, at the end of the 13th century via the Monte Moro Pass and called it Makanà. It holds the Touring Club Italiano’s Orange Flag (Bandiera Arancione).

People come mainly for the east face of Monte Rosa, which you see from everywhere in the village. In summer there are easy walks, the Belvedere viewpoint over the glacier, the Lago delle Fate, a gold mine and hikes to mountain huts. In winter there is a small ski area, but it was closed for the 2025/26 season: read the skiing section before you book a ski week.

What to see in Macugnaga

The east face of Monte Rosa

This is what made Macugnaga famous among climbers. From the valley floor rises a wall of rock and ice about 2,600 metres high and about 4 km wide, considered the highest face in the Alps. At the top are the Monte Rosa summits, up to the 4,634-metre Dufourspitze, the highest point of the massif, on the Swiss side.

You don’t need to climb to see it: it is right in front of you from Staffa and Pecetto. To get close, go up to the Belvedere by chairlift or on foot. Mountaineering history runs deep here: in 1889 the priest Achille Ratti, later Pope Pius XI, climbed the east face to the Zumstein Col and made the first crossing from Macugnaga to Zermatt.

Dorf, the Chiesa Vecchia and the lime tree

Dorf is the oldest part of the village, between Staffa and Pecetto, with Walser houses of wood and stone. Here stands the Chiesa Vecchia, the “old church” of Santa Maria: it is mentioned in a document from 1317, though its present look dates from the 16th century. Next to it is the small cemetery where Monte Rosa guides and climbers are buried or remembered.

In front of the church is the great lime tree, the symbol of the village: its trunk is about 7 metres round and, according to tradition, it was planted in the 13th century by the first Walser settlers. Today it is hollow and ailing, protected by a fence. From Staffa it is a few minutes’ walk along a pedestrian lane.

Museo Casa Walser in Borca

To see how the Walser of Macugnaga lived, go to Borca, the lowest hamlet after Pestarena. The museum opened in 1982 in the 18th-century former parish house, on three floors, and recreates the rooms of a Walser home with everyday objects, tools and furniture.

Opening hours change with the season and are shorter in winter: ask at the tourist office before you go.

Museum of the Mountain and of Smuggling

In Staffa a small museum tells two Macugnaga stories: climbing on Monte Rosa, with mementos of historic guides such as Mattia Zurbriggen, and smuggling over the passes to Switzerland, including a section on rice carried on people’s backs. There are also caricatures by Aldo Mazza. A short visit, good for a rainy day.

Guia gold mine

For centuries the Valle Anzasca was a gold valley. The last mine, at Pestarena, closed in 1961. Today you can visit the Miniera della Guia (also spelled Guja) in the hamlet of Fornarelli, just before Borca: the vein was discovered in 1710, and it is billed as the first gold mine open to visitors in Italy.

Visits are guided, on foot, along a level tunnel that is wheelchair accessible. Inside it is about 9°C all year and very damp: bring a jacket even in August. Photos are not allowed. Hours and prices change from year to year, so check before you go, especially outside summer.

Lago delle Fate

The Lago delle Fate, the “Fairies’ Lake”, is a small lake at the mouth of the Val Quarazza, held by a small dam. You walk up from Isella, between Borca and Staffa, through the hamlet of Motta: a short climb that works with children. In summer it gets busy, especially at weekends.

For a longer walk, carry on about 2 km up the valley to the old mining site of Crocette, nicknamed the “Città Morta” (dead town). From Pecetto (1,370 m) two chairlifts in a row take you to Alpe Burki (1,593 m) and on to the Belvedere at about 1,900 m. From there you see the Belvedere Glacier, largely covered in rock debris, with the Monte Rosa face above.

The chairlifts were closed for a long time and reopened on 19 July 2026. If they are not running, you can walk up from Pecetto: about 550 metres of ascent. At Alpe Burki, halfway up, there is a farm restaurant (agriturismo).

Rifugio Zamboni-Zappa and Alpe Pedriola

From the Belvedere the path crosses the moraine and the glacier to Alpe Pedriola and the Rifugio Zamboni-Zappa (2,065 m), built in 1925. Allow about 1 hour 30 minutes: little climbing, but uneven ground. It is Macugnaga’s classic hike, with the east face in front of you all the way.

If you still have energy, continue from the hut to the Lago delle Locce (about 2,230 m), roughly an hour higher on a steep path.

Monte Moro Pass

The Monte Moro Pass (2,868 m) is the crossing into Switzerland and the old Walser route. At the top stands a golden statue of the Madonna, with the Rifugio Oberto–Maroli just below. On the Swiss side you walk down via Tälliboden to the Mattmark reservoir and Saas Almagell. There is no road: you cross on foot only.

Normally you ride up on the two-section cable car from Staffa: Staffa–Alpe Bill and Alpe Bill–Passo Moro, with the top station at 2,806 m. Since the accident of 30 December 2025, however, the second section has been closed for major maintenance. As of October 2026 only the first section to Alpe Bill (1,711 m) runs. According to the operator, Macugnaga Trasporti e Servizi, there are more than 20 km of pistes and 7 lifts: 2 cable cars, 3 chairlifts and 2 drag lifts, plus a beginners’ area with 2 magic carpets in Pecetto.

Belvedere (Pecetto): Pecetto–Burki and Burki–Belvedere chairlifts, from 1,370 to about 1,900 m. The easiest area, good for families. The Fontanone run, about 2 km, is an easy descent from Burki to the village; the Belvedere and Ruonograbe runs are intermediate.

Monte Moro (Staffa): Staffa–Alpe Bill and Alpe Bill–Passo Moro cable cars, up to 2,806 m. The more demanding area, high up, with long descents towards the village.

The situation for winter 2026/27

Here are the facts. On 30 December 2025 a cabin of the Monte Moro cable car hit the buffers at the top station: around ten people were lightly injured and about a hundred were flown down by helicopter. The lift was impounded and winter 2025/26 in Macugnaga passed almost without skiing: only the beginners’ carpets, the ice rink and sledging areas stayed open.

In July 2026 the Belvedere chairlifts and the first cable-car section to Alpe Bill reopened. The second section to Passo Moro has been released by prosecutors and is under maintenance; the town aims to reopen it for the winter, but in mid-October 2026 there are no official season dates and no 2026/27 lift pass prices. Before you book, check which lifts are open on the Macugnaga Monterosa Ski website.

Ski schools, beginners and snowshoeing

Macugnaga has ski schools and mountain guides. For children, the place to go is the Pecetto beginners’ area, with magic carpets and its own ticket. The classic snowshoe route goes from the Belvedere towards the Rifugio Zamboni-Zappa, facing the east face; when the cable car runs, also the plateau at the Monte Moro Pass. Check the avalanche bulletin first: the area below the east face is exposed to avalanches.

If you want a big ski area, Macugnaga is not the right choice right now: the valleys on the other side of Monte Rosa are a better bet.
