It is in the province of Belluno, in the Veneto region, not in South Tyrol as many people assume. The centre sits at 1,224 metres in the Boite valley. Venice is about 160 km away, two hours by car; Venice Marco Polo airport is about 150 km and Treviso airport about 130 km, both linked to Cortina by direct coach.

The municipality is large, over 250 km², with about 5,400 residents. Until 1918 Cortina belonged to Austrian Tyrol, which is why it has a Ladin name, Anpezo, and a German one, Hayden. The forests and pastures are still owned collectively by the Regole d’Ampezzo, the ancient community body that also runs the nature park.

In winter you come to ski the Tofana, Faloria, Cristallo and Cinque Torri, all part of the Dolomiti Superski pass. In summer Cortina is a base for some of the best-known hikes in the Dolomites: Lake Sorapis, the First World War tunnels on the Lagazuoi, the Cinque Torri, and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo half an hour’s drive away. In February 2026 Cortina co-hosted the Winter Olympics with Milan, seventy years after the 1956 Games.

What to see in Cortina d'Ampezzo

You can walk around the town in a couple of hours; the rest is up in the mountains.

Corso Italia and the Basilica of Saints Philip and James

Corso Italia is the pedestrian main street, lined with shops, cafés and long-established hotels. Halfway along, on Piazza Venezia, stands the Casa delle Regole. A little further on is the Basilica dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo, built between 1769 and 1775 on the site of 13th- and 16th-century churches. Its bell tower is the town’s landmark.

The Regole museums

The Casa delle Regole houses the Mario Rimoldi Museum of Modern Art, with more than 800 works by 20th-century Italian painters. The Regole also run the Rinaldo Zardini Palaeontology Museum, with fossils found in the Dolomites, and the Ethnographic Museum on valley life before tourism. Good options on a rainy day; opening hours change with the season.

The Regole d’Ampezzo and the nature park

The Regole date back to the Middle Ages. They bring together the original families of the valley, who own the forests and pastures in common. The land cannot be sold or divided and passes down the generations under old statutes called Laudi. There were originally eleven Regole, one per village.

Since 1990 the Regole have also managed the Ampezzo Dolomites Nature Park: 11,200 hectares north of the town, covering the Tofane, Fanes, Croda Rossa and Cristallo.

The mountains of Cortina

The basin is ringed by mountain groups worth learning to recognise. To the west are the three Tofane, the highest of which, the Tofana di Mezzo, tops 3,200 metres; to the north-east the Cristallo and Pomagagnon; to the east the Faloria with the Sorapis behind it; to the south-west the Croda da Lago and the Cinque Torri, with the Nuvolau and Lagazuoi further back. The Dolomites have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009.

Cable cars from town

Two cable cars leave from town. The Freccia nel Cielo, near the ice stadium, climbs the Tofane: first to Col Drusciè (1,778 m), then to Ra Valles (2,475 m), among the rocks where the First World War front line ran. From the centre the Faloria cable car climbs the opposite side of the valley to a hut with a terrace over the town. Both run in winter and summer: times and fares on the Tofana – Freccia nel Cielo website.

Lagazuoi and the First World War tunnels

From the Falzarego Pass (2,105 m) a cable car takes a few minutes to reach Rifugio Lagazuoi at 2,752 metres. From 1915 to 1917 the front between Italy and Austria-Hungary ran through here, and the mountain is now an open-air museum of restored trenches, walkways and tunnels. The best known is the Piccolo Lagazuoi tunnel, dug into the rock by Italian Alpini troops: you walk it downhill to the pass in 2–3 hours, with a head torch and via ferrata kit. In 2026 the cable car ran from 6 June to 18 October; dates and guided tours on the Lagazuoi website.

Cinque Torri

The Cinque Torri (“five towers”) are a cluster of rock towers above the Falzarego road, about 11 km from Cortina. A chairlift runs from Bai de Dones to Rifugio Scoiattoli, at over 2,200 metres. Around the towers another open-air museum shows rebuilt Italian trenches and gun positions: an easy walk, fine with children. From the Scoiattoli, path 439 leads in about an hour to Rifugio Averau (2,413 m), below the Nuvolau.

Lake Sorapis

Milky-turquoise Lake Sorapis lies at about 1,925 metres beneath the Sorapis face, next to Rifugio Vandelli. The walk starts at Passo Tre Croci, about 10 km from Cortina, on path 215: about 2 hours each way and about 300 metres of ascent. After a stretch of forest come exposed sections with fixed cables and metal rungs, so it is not for anyone uneasy with heights. The car park at the pass is small: arrive early.

Passo Giau and Falzarego Pass

Two roads climb west from Cortina via Pocol. Passo Giau (2,236 m), about 16 km away, is a grassy pass below the Nuvolau that drops down to Colle Santa Lucia and Selva di Cadore. The easiest snowshoe outings are at the Cinque Torri and towards the huts served by the lifts. There are several ski and snowboard schools in town, with children’s lessons on the Tofana’s gentle slopes.

Summer in Cortina d'Ampezzo

From June to September the Ampezzo basin is one of the best hiking bases in the Dolomites. Start early or pick a weekday.

Cinque Torri, Averau and Nuvolau

The chairlift from Bai de Dones drops you at Rifugio Scoiattoli. From there, loop around the towers and the open-air museum, or climb path 439 to Rifugio Averau (2,413 m) in about an hour and, if you have the legs, carry on to Rifugio Nuvolau (2,575 m), the oldest hut in the area, with a 360-degree view.

Lagazuoi

Ride the cable car up from the Falzarego Pass and walk down: through the Piccolo Lagazuoi tunnel (2–3 hours, head torch and via ferrata kit) or on the normal path. Walking up from the pass means about 650 metres of ascent.

Tre Cime di Lavaredo

The Tre Cime are about 22 km away. By car you must book the toll road to Rifugio Auronzo online in advance: in 2026 a car paid 40 euros. In high summer Dolomiti Bus line 51 runs from Cortina, plus a shuttle from Misurina. The classic Tre Cime loop is about 9.5 km with about 400 metres of ascent, 3–4 hours.

Cycling the old railway

The Lunga Via delle Dolomiti cycle path follows the railway that linked Calalzo and Dobbiaco until 1964: more than 60 km in all, with original tunnels and bridges, and Cortina halfway along. Northwards, via Fiames and Cimabanche, it climbs gently and suits families; towards Dobbiaco you roll down into the Puster Valley. From Cortina bus station the first stretch is shared with pedestrians.

Day trips from Cortina d'Ampezzo

Lake Misurina (about 14 km): the lake at 1,754 metres on the road to the Tre Cime, over Passo Tre Croci.

Tre Cime di Lavaredo (about 22 km to Rifugio Auronzo): toll road, advance booking required.

Passo Giau (about 16 km): hairpins, meadows and views of the Nuvolau.

San Vito di Cadore (about 12 km): the nearest town to the south, with slopes on the same local pass and lower prices.

Dobbiaco / Toblach (about 32 km): in South Tyrol, gateway to the Puster Valley, with a railway station.

Auronzo di Cadore (about 37 km): the town on the Veneto side of the Tre Cime, with a small ski area on Monte Agudo.

Arabba (about 37 km, over the Falzarego): below the Marmolada, on the Sella Ronda.

Alleghe (about 40 km): the lake beneath the Civetta wall.

Where to stay in Cortina d'Ampezzo

Cortina is expensive, especially at Christmas, in February and in August. From Austria and South Tyrol you arrive via Dobbiaco on the same road (about 32 km); from Innsbruck it is about 165 km, from Munich about 300 km. In winter you need winter tyres or snow chains on board.

By train

Cortina no longer has a railway station. The most convenient is Calalzo-Pieve di Cadore-Cortina, on the line to Belluno, Padua and Venice, about 34 km away. With Cortina Link you buy one ticket for train and bus: the Dolomiti Bus leg from Calalzo costs 4.70 euros and stops at Cortina Scuole after about an hour. Details on Trenitalia – Cortina Link. From the north, the nearest station is Dobbiaco in the Puster Valley.

By bus

Cortina Express coaches link Cortina with Venice airport, Venezia Mestre, Piazzale Roma and Treviso; book online, through the app or on board: timetables on the Cortina Express website. From Mestre the trip takes about two and a half hours. From Calalzo there is Dolomiti Bus line 30; in summer line 51 runs towards Misurina and the Tre Cime.

By plane

The closest airports are Venice Marco Polo (about 150 km) and Treviso (about 130 km), the usual gateways for international visitors; both have Cortina Express coaches. Further away are Innsbruck (about 165 km) and Munich (about 300 km), best with a hire car. Private transfers from Venice are another option.

Parking

Corso Italia is pedestrianised: leave the car in the paid public car parks around the centre and walk or take the bus. For skiing, use the car parks at the lift stations.
