The village sits at 1,258 metres and has about 1,750 residents. It is the last Lombard village before Trentino: the Tonale Pass, on the regional border, is 12 km away, and to the north the Gavia Pass leads to Valtellina. The Oglio river starts here, where the Narcanello and Frigidolfo streams meet.

Driving distances: Edolo about 20 km, Brescia about 116 km (2 hours), Bergamo and Orio al Serio airport about 115 km (2 hours), Trento about 97 km (1 hour 40), Milan 170 to 185 km depending on the route (just under 3 hours). Without a car, take the Trenord train to Edolo and then a bus.

Why go: in winter Ponte di Legno is one of the four sectors of the Pontedilegno-Tonale ski area, with 46 runs and 29 lifts between 1,121 and 3,000 metres, the Presena glacier and a gondola from the village up to the Tonale. In summer there are trails in the Stelvio National Park and the Adamello park, First World War trenches, the Gavia and Mortirolo climbs for road cyclists and a family cycle path. Further down you will find the official 2026/27 lift pass prices.

What to see in Ponte di Legno

The village centre and Piazza XXVII Settembre

The centre is pedestrianised, with shops, bars and restaurants. The name of the main square, XXVII Settembre, recalls 27 September 1917: during the First World War, Austrian artillery shelled the village, already evacuated, and destroyed almost all of it. What you see today was rebuilt after the war.

In the centre stands the church of the Santissima Trinità, from 1685, with a wooden doorway from 1929. The village is small and easy to explore on foot; the gondola to the Tonale also leaves from the centre.

Church of Sant’Apollonio

Just outside the centre, in the Plampezzo area, the church of Sant’Apollonio is the oldest building in the municipality. It dates from the 12th–13th century and has 14th-century frescoes inside.

Presena glacier

The Presena is the glacier above the Tonale Pass, on the Lombardy–Trentino border. Its summit is at 3,069 metres. You get up by gondola: from the Tonale, the Paradiso gondola reaches Passo Paradiso (2,585 m) in 5 minutes, then the Presena gondola climbs to 3,000 metres in 7 minutes. From Ponte di Legno, including the gondola to the Tonale, the top is about 26 minutes away.

In winter you can ski here until the end of May. There is no summer skiing: since 2008, from June to September, part of the glacier is covered with geotextile sheets to slow the melting. Bring a warm jacket, even in August.

Tonale Pass (Passo del Tonale)

The Tonale Pass is at 1,884 metres, 12 km from the village, between Lombardy and Trentino. It is an open plateau between the Adamello-Presanella and Ortler-Cevedale ranges. In winter it is the sector with the most easy runs; in summer it is the starting point for hikes towards the Presena and the First World War forts.

At the pass stands the military memorial (Sacrario), built in 1922–1924 and later turned into an ossuary: it holds the remains of more than 847 soldiers who fell on the Tonale and Adamello front.

Gavia Pass (Passo di Gavia)

The Gavia Pass, above 2,600 metres, links Ponte di Legno with Santa Caterina Valfurva and Bormio. From Ponte di Legno it is about 18 km of narrow, steep road, with gradients up to 14–16% and a tunnel of about 400 metres lit on one side only. On the last bends you look down on the Lago Nero; the Lago Bianco is near the top.

The road is closed in winter, usually from October to late May: in 2026 the Brescia side reopened on 22 May. It has been a classic Giro d’Italia climb since 1960.

Pezzo, Case di Viso and the Stelvio National Park

Pezzo, at 1,565 metres, is the highest year-round inhabited hamlet in the province of Brescia. From here a road climbs into the Val di Viso to Case di Viso, a cluster of stone and timber huts inside the Stelvio National Park. Trails start here for the Bozzi refuge (2,478 m) and the Montozzo lakes. In summer a bus runs up from Ponte di Legno.

On the road between Pezzo and Case di Viso is the Pezzo wildlife area: 5 hectares of forest at 1,600 metres with enclosures for red deer, roe deer, chamois and ibex. Entry is free along a marked path: a good choice with children.

Temù and the White War Museum

Temù is the next village, 3–4 km away, at 1,144 metres. It is part of the ski area, with four chairlifts and eight runs. In Via Roma, the Museo della Guerra Bianca in Adamello shows weapons, uniforms, a high-altitude hut and many photos of the war fought on the glaciers from 1915 to 1918. Check opening times before you go, as they change with the season.

First World War forts and trenches

The Tonale was the border between Italy and Austria-Hungary, and forts and trenches remain. The Corno d’Aola fort, at 1,964 metres above Ponte di Legno, was the only Italian fort in the area: built between 1900 and 1913, it was blown up at the end of the Second World War and only a few ruins remain near Valbione. On the Trentino side, the Zaccarana fort, above 2,000 metres, can be partly visited.

Skiing in Ponte di Legno

Ponte di Legno is part of the Pontedilegno-Tonale ski area, run by the Consorzio Adamello Ski. The Paradiso run is 3 km long with about 700 metres of vertical, facing north. From the top of the Presena down to Ponte di Legno you ski 11 km and more than 1,700 metres of vertical. The gondola between Ponte di Legno and the Tonale has two sections and takes about a quarter of an hour.

For the 2026/27 season the consortium has announced new 10-seat gondolas: in Ponte di Legno, replacing the Corno d’Aola chairlift and the Angelo drag lift (ride time down from 15 to 6.5 minutes), at the Tonale towards Malga Valbiolo, and new cabins on the Paradiso gondola.

Lift passes 2026/27. The official price calendar runs from 28 November 2026 to 2 May 2027; each sector opens depending on snow, and the season opening is celebrated on 6 December in Ponte di Legno. An adult day pass costs 52 to 70 euros depending on the dates: 70 euros from 26 December to 10 January and in February, 66 euros for most of January and March, 54 euros from mid-April. An adult 6-day pass ranges from 160 euros (early and late season offers) to 345 euros (Christmas and February weeks). Juniors (born 2009–2018) pay 39 to 56 euros a day. Children born in 2019 or later ski free with a paying adult family member: one adult, one child. Buying online with the Smart Skipass gives a dynamic discount of up to 25%. The ski bus from Edolo to Temù and Ponte di Legno is free with a 2- to 14-day pass.

Cross-country, night skiing and snowshoes. Two cross-country centres with 30 km in total: Valsozzine, in Ponte di Legno, has three loops of 2.5 to 5 km along the Narcanello stream with snowmaking; Vermiglio, in Trentino, has more than 20 km and a trail lit until 11 pm. In Ponte di Legno you can also ski on some evenings on the floodlit red Valbione run. For snowshoeing there are 17 routes, over 120 km between Val Camonica and Val di Sole: where there is avalanche risk, a transceiver, shovel and probe are mandatory.

Summer in Ponte di Legno

Summer runs from late June to mid-September. Across pastures to First World War remains, fine with children.

Tonale Pass – Passo Paradiso: from the turn-off for the Alveo Presena (1,820 m) to 2,573 metres, trail SAT 281, 753 metres of ascent, about 3 hours. A standard hiking trail with no difficult sections; you can come down by gondola.

Forte Strino – Monte Tonale Orientale: on the Trentino side, from 1,538 to 2,696 metres, 1,158 metres of ascent, about 4 hours 20. Long but not difficult; you can stop at the Zaccarana fort or the “Città morta” military village.

Sentiero dei Fiori: a via ferrata at 3,000 metres between Passo Presena and Passo Paradiso, with ladders, walkways and a suspension bridge along First World War positions. Experienced climbers only, with harness and via ferrata kit. In August, by order of the municipality, it can only be walked one way: from Passo Presena to Passo Paradiso.

Cycling. The Passo Tonale – Edolo cycle path is 29 km long, paved and traffic-free, the first stretch of the Ciclovia dell’Oglio, which runs over 280 km to the Po. Downhill from Ponte di Legno it suits families; the stretch between Ponte di Legno and the Tonale is very steep. For road cyclists: the Gavia, the Mortirolo (1,852 m, climbed from Monno) and the Tonale. There are also two kids’ bike parks, in Ponte di Legno and at the Tonale.

With children. Besides the Pezzo wildlife area, there is the Parco delle Marmotte at Valbiolo, at 2,244 metres, a seven-stage trail with wooden play features: in summer 2026 it could only be reached on foot from the Tonale, about an hour, because of chairlift works. The Val Sozzine, close to the village, is one of the most popular easy family walks.

Golf. At Valbione, at about 1,500 metres, there is a 9-hole course (June–September).

Day trips from Ponte di Legno

Bormio: in summer via the Gavia, about 62 km; when the pass is closed you drive round via Aprica and Tirano, about 89 km and an hour and a half.

Stelvio Pass: from Bormio, summer only. From Milan it is 170 to 185 km, just under 3 hours. From the north: A22 Brenner motorway to San Michele all’Adige or Trento Nord, then Val di Non, Val di Sole and the Tonale Pass (about 97 km from Trento). In winter you need snow tyres or chains on board.

By train

The nearest station is Edolo, end of the Trenord Brescia – Iseo – Edolo line: about 2 hours from Brescia. From Edolo, continue by bus to Ponte di Legno (about 20 km). From Trentino, take the Trento–Malè railway and then a bus to the Tonale. From Edolo the ride takes half an hour to three quarters of an hour.

By plane

The nearest airport is Bergamo Orio al Serio, about 2 hours by car, with a bus stop for Ponte di Legno.
