It is not a town in its own right but a hamlet of Frabosa Sottana, at about 1,500 metres. The nearest railway station is Mondov\u00ec, 27 km away (35 minutes by car). Cuneo is 43 km away, Turin about 110 km (1 hour 40), Savona 90 km and Genoa 140 km. Nice is about three hours by road, which makes Prato Nevoso one of the closest Italian ski resorts to the French Riviera.<\/p>\n<p>The resort was built in the 1960s purely for skiing, for skiers from Liguria and Turin: there is no old village, but the slopes start right outside the apartment blocks. Together with Artesina and Frabosa Soprana it forms the Mondol\u00e8 Ski area, the largest in the province of Cuneo. The operator advertises more than 130 km of pistes, with lifts up to about 2,000 metres and snowmaking. It snows a lot here: on 23 December 2025 about 1.5 metres fell in 24 hours, building a snowpack of around 3 metres, the deepest in Europe at the time.<\/p>\n<p>In winter you come to ski, including at night, and for family holidays: mostly easy and intermediate runs, ski schools and a snow playground. In summer the gondola climbs towards 2,000 metres for the bike park, hiking and the summit of Monte Mondol\u00e8. Nearby are two show caves, the Vicoforte sanctuary with the largest elliptical dome in the world, and the Marguareis nature park. The highlights are the views from the lifts, the caves in the neighbouring valleys and the towns of the Monregalese, all within an hour&#8217;s drive.<\/p>\n<h3>The Conca, the resort centre<\/h3>\n<p>The &#8220;Conca&#8221; (the bowl) is the heart of Prato Nevoso: a shopping arcade, bars, restaurants, ski schools and the bottom station of the Blu chairlift. Apartment blocks climb the slopes of Monte Malanotte in terraces. Look at the street names: many are named after stars and constellations, such as Via Orione and Via Corona Boreale. On night-skiing evenings the floodlit runs can be seen from all over the bowl.<\/p>\n<h3>La Rossa gondola<\/h3>\n<p>The La Rossa panoramic gondola starts at the Sorie del Caudano (1,553 m) and rises towards 2,000 metres. It runs in winter for skiers and in summer for hikers and mountain bikers; there is a wooden playground for children at the top. In summer the Stalle Lunghe host evening music and events, in 2026 from 18 July to 29 August.<\/p>\n<h3>The Tour de France climb<\/h3>\n<p>On 20 July 2008, stage 15 of the Tour de France, from Embrun, finished at Prato Nevoso. Australian Simon Gerrans won the stage and Luxembourg&#8217;s Fr\u00e4nk Schleck took the yellow jersey. The final climb, rated first category, is 11.4 km long at an average gradient of 6.9%. The passages run for more than 3 km over four levels; the guided tour covers about 900 metres of the second and third levels and takes around 70 minutes. It is about 9\u00b0C inside all year, so bring a jacket and shoes with a good grip. Visits are by booking only: phone ahead.<\/p>\n<h3>Bossea Cave<\/h3>\n<p>In the next valley, the Val Corsaglia, in the municipality of Frabosa Soprana, the Grotta di Bossea has been open to visitors since 1874 and is considered Italy&#8217;s first show cave. One of the halls displays the skeleton of a cave bear. The tour takes about two hours, at a constant temperature of around 9\u00b0C. Work began in 1596; the dome frescoes, over 6,000 square metres, date from 1746\u20131748. The &#8220;Magnificat&#8221; tour takes you up to about 60 metres with a helmet and harness, through areas normally closed to the public: about two hours, mainly at weekends and daily in August. English audio guides are available. Book ahead.<\/p>\n<h3>Monte Mondol\u00e8<\/h3>\n<p>The mountain that gives the ski area its name: 2,382 metres, the summit above the pistes. The main lifts are the Blu chairlift from the Conca, the six-seat Caudano chairlift and the La Rossa gondola. For the 2026\/27 season a new eight-seat Blu chairlift is planned, the first in Piedmont: 1,120 metres in about four minutes, replacing the old four-seater. The Prato Nevoso pistes link with Artesina; Frabosa Soprana has its own sector on the same pass. In the 2025\/26 season night skiing ran on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8 to 11 pm, and every evening over the Christmas holidays, with the Blu chairlift, two floodlit runs, the nursery area and the snowpark. There is a dedicated evening pass. Check the new season&#8217;s calendar before you go.<\/p>\n<h3>Mondol\u00e8 Ski lift pass<\/h3>\n<p>The pass covers the whole area and uses dynamic pricing: buy online a few days ahead and you pay less, especially on weekdays and in low season. There are day, half-day, hourly, points, evening and season passes. As of October 2026 the 2026\/27 price list has not been published: prices and dates on the <a href=\"https:\/\/mondole.it\/tariffe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mondol\u00e8 Ski website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Ski schools, snowpark and children<\/h3>\n<p>Prato Nevoso has four ski schools, including specialist lessons for children, a nursery slope and a childcare service. The snowpark has freestyle, slopestyle and big-air lines. Prato Nevoso Village is the snow playground for the youngest.<\/p>\n<h3>Snowshoeing, freeride and heli-skiing<\/h3>\n<p>The resort offers snowshoe routes, a freeride map and heli-skiing. It stays cool up here when the plains and the coast are hot.<\/p>\n<h3>Hiking Monte Mondol\u00e8<\/h3>\n<p>The classic route starts at the Sorie del Caudano (1,553 m), the bottom station of the La Rossa gondola. A track takes you to the Rifugio La Balma (1,885 m) in about 30 minutes; you can also drive there on a gravel road from the Colle del Prel car park. From the hut the path climbs steeply through meadows to the south ridge and the summit (2,382 m) in about 1 hour 35, with a few easy rocky steps where you use your hands. In total about 850 metres of ascent; from the hut, the loop is 5.5 km with 540 metres of climbing, graded moderate. Waymarking is patchy: take a GPS track.<\/p>\n<h3>Bike park and e-bikes<\/h3>\n<p>The bike park is served by the Blu chairlift and the La Rossa gondola, with downhill trails; the bike pass is also valid at the Artesina bike park. There is a mountain-bike school and e-bike hire for the dirt roads across the pastures.
