It is the upper valley of the Avisio river, which rises on the Marmolada and flows on through Val di Fiemme. Around you are the Marmolada, the Sella, the Sassolungo, the Catinaccio (Rosengarten) and the Latemar.

The villages sit between about 1,200 m (Moena, Soraga) and 1,460 m (Canazei). There are six municipalities, from south to north: Moena, Soraga di Fassa, San Giovanni di Fassa (Pozza and Vigo merged in 2018), Mazzin, Campitello di Fassa and Canazei, about 10,000 people in all. This is a Ladin valley: many locals speak Ladin, a Romance language of the Dolomites. From the Bolzano Nord exit of the Brenner motorway, Vigo is about 40 km away; from the Ora/Egna exit, Moena is about 45 km. The nearest airport is Bolzano, about 40 km away.

In winter you ski six areas with 189 km of slopes and 77 lifts, linked to the Sellaronda and the Dolomiti Superski pass. In summer you have the Vajolet Towers, Lake Antermoia, Val San Nicolò, the Marmolada and a 48 km cycle path along the river.

What to see in the Fassa Valley

The best views are up high: take the lifts from the villages, or drive over the five passes (Pordoi, Sella, Fedaia, San Pellegrino and Costalunga).

Ciampedie and the Catinaccio

In Vigo di Fassa a cable car leaves from the village centre for Ciampedie, at about 2,000 m. Below it lies Lake Fedaia (2,053 m), a reservoir with a dam built in 1956. Drive up from Canazei via Penia, or take the summer bus from Penia to the Fedaia Pass (2,057 m).

On 3 July 2022 a serac collapsed below Punta Rocca, killing 11 people. Since then the north side has been closed by local ordinances and the rules change from year to year: check the Canazei municipality website before you go up. The summit requires mountaineering experience or a guide. The Marmolada cable car starts from Malga Ciapela, on the Veneto side.

Col Rodella and Belvedere

From Campitello a cable car climbs to Col Rodella (2,480 m), facing the Sassolungo and the Sella; in summer it is a paragliding take-off spot. From Canazei you reach Col dei Rossi on the Belvedere (2,382 m) by gondola and cable car; from Alba there is a direct cable car.

Val San Nicolò

A wide side valley above Pozza di Fassa, dotted with haylofts and mountain huts, closed to the east by the Marmolada group (Cima dell’Uomo, 3,010 m). In summer it is closed to cars: park for free at Vidor and ride the shuttle. Higher up are the Jonta waterfalls.

Costalunga Pass and Lake Carezza

The Costalunga Pass, or Carezza Pass (1,753 m), above Vigo, marks the border with South Tyrol and is the shortest road to Bolzano. Pera, just north, is the base of the chairlifts to the Catinaccio. Vigo di Fassa (1,382 m) was for centuries the religious and political centre of the valley: Ladin museum, Monzoni mineral museum and the Ciampedie cable car.

Mazzin (1,372 m)

The smallest municipality, with the hamlets of Campestrin and Fontanazzo.
