It sits at 745 metres on the valley floor, where the Canali stream meets the Cismon river. Since 2016 it has not been a municipality in its own right: it is part of Primiero San Martino di Castrozza, the municipality formed by merging Fiera di Primiero, Siror, Tonadico and Transacqua. About 500 people live here on a tiny patch of land: at 0.15 km\u00b2, it used to be the second-smallest municipality in Italy.<\/p>\n<p>Distances: Feltre, with the nearest railway station, is about 30 km away; Trento about 95 km. The closest airports are Treviso (about 70 km) and Venice (about 95 km). <a href=\"https:\/\/bestmountain.eu\/en\/trentino\/san-martino-di-castrozza\/\">San Martino di Castrozza<\/a> and its slopes are about 15 km up the valley.<\/p>\n<p>Why go: it is a real valley town, with shops, services and a 15th-century old centre built on silver and copper mining. Within minutes you are in Val Canali, under the Pale di San Martino, or at Lake Calaita. Around 1400 the Primiero was a fief of the Counts of Welsperg, within the Austrian lands, and the copper, silver and iron mines brought work and money. Miners from Tyrol, known locally as &#8220;canopi&#8221;, built their houses on the market site where the two streams meet. Hence the name &#8220;Fiera&#8221;, meaning fair: it was, and still is, the valley&#8217;s shopping town.<\/p>\n<p>Today the centre is a tangle of narrow lanes, small squares and painted fa\u00e7ades; Via Terrabugio is one of the most photographed streets. It is also where you will find a supermarket, a bar open in the evening or a sports shop, which higher villages often lack out of season.<\/p>\n<h3>Santa Maria Assunta church<\/h3>\n<p>The parish church is the main monument and one of the finest Gothic buildings in Trentino. Work finished in 1493 and it was consecrated in 1495 by the Bishop of Feltre. It was paid for with mining money, and it shows: three naves, a tall frescoed bell tower and Baroque altars, including the so-called &#8220;miners&#8217; altar&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, look for the large fresco commissioned around 1550 by Giangiacomo Roemer in memory of his children who had died: it shows his family&#8217;s coat of arms, the Habsburg eagle and two Welsperg crests. The church&#8217;s triptych was kept for a long time at the Buonconsiglio Museum in Trento. Restoration work uncovered the remains of an early Christian church from the 5th\u20136th century.<\/p>\n<h3>The Mines Palace<\/h3>\n<p>Next to the church stands the Palazzo delle Miniere, also called Palazzo del Dazio. It dates from the second half of the 15th century and housed the Austrian magistrate who supervised the mines and collected taxes. It looks more Tyrolean than Italian.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2020 it has hosted P-QU\u00cc, an interactive timeline of Primiero&#8217;s history, built partly with timber from trees felled by storm Vaia in 2018. The centre has two more churches: the small church of San Martino, the oldest in Fiera, with frescoes inside and out, and the Madonna dell&#8217;Aiuto church, with a large painting on its fa\u00e7ade. Ten minutes each is enough.<\/p>\n<h3>Castel Pietra<\/h3>\n<p>At the mouth of Val Canali, on a huge boulder above Tonadico, stand the ruins of Castel Pietra. First recorded in 1273, it passed to the Welsperg family in 1401 and became their residence. The Venetians destroyed it in 1511; partly rebuilt, it was abandoned in 1675. The ruins were restored in the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>It is privately owned: you get a good view from the Val Canali road and from the path that climbs from Tonadico to the lake. It lies within the Paneveggio \u2013 Pale di San Martino Nature Park. At the head of the valley are rock walls such as Cima Canali; in front, meadows, forest and alpine farms.<\/p>\n<p>Just past Castel Pietra is Villa Welsperg, a 19th-century hunting lodge that now houses the park headquarters and a visitor centre on geology, forests and wildlife. In front of it lies Laghetto Welsperg, a small artificial lake at about 1,020 metres with an easy loop around it. It is the simplest walk to do with children.<\/p>\n<h3>The Pale di San Martino<\/h3>\n<p>The Pale are the Dolomite group that closes the valley to the north-east and are part of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site. The highest peak is Cima della Vezzana, 3,192 metres. You can see them from the centre of Fiera; to get up high by lift you need to go to San Martino, where a gondola and a cable car take you to the plateau.<\/p>\n<h3>Mezzano<\/h3>\n<p>Mezzano is a few kilometres down the valley. It is listed among &#8220;The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy&#8221; and is known for its woodpiles: the permanent exhibition &#8220;Cataste &amp; Canzei&#8221; turns the firewood stacked under the houses into art installations, with new ones added every year. You see them by wandering the village lanes.<\/p>\n<p>Above Mezzano and Imer, in Val Noana, a suspension bridge over the stream is the goal of a short and popular summer walk.<\/p>\n<h3>Lake Calaita and the Vanoi valley<\/h3>\n<p>Lago di Calaita is about 15 km from Fiera, at around 1,600 metres, on the road over Passo Gobbera towards the Vanoi valley. It is a natural lake with a peat bog and views of the Pale, inside the park. To ski, head to San Martino di Castrozza, about 15 km away, which has 60 km of slopes together with Passo Rolle. The main sector is the Carosello delle Malghe, about 45 km of runs dotted with mountain huts; Passo Rolle adds about 15 km of more open, sunny terrain. The two areas are not yet linked by lift: work on the connecting gondolas has started, but it is a multi-year project.<\/p>\n<p>The area is part of Dolomiti Superski. For the 2026\/27 season, an adult day pass for Dolomiti Superski costs \u20ac89 in high season and \u20ac80 in low season. The 2026\/27 prices for the local San Martino\u2013Rolle pass are not yet on the official website: check the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sanmartino.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Martino di Castrozza, Primiero and Vanoi tourist board<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dolomitisuperski.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dolomiti Superski<\/a>. Buying online a few days ahead pays off. The season usually runs from late November or early December to early April, snow permitting.<\/p>\n<p>Staying in Fiera and skiing in San Martino works well with a car: about 15 km of uphill road. Without a car, there are regular buses to San Martino and, on winter weekends, the Fly Ski Shuttle from the airports.<\/p>\n<h3>Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and skating<\/h3>\n<p>For cross-country skiing there is the Passo Cereda centre above Tonadico, with loops of different difficulty; the easy trail around Lake Calaita; and the Pr\u00e0 delle Nasse centre in San Martino. Many mountain roads have access rules from mid-June to mid-September, so use the buses, which leave from Primiero.<\/p>\n<h3>Easy walks<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Laghetto and Villa Welsperg<\/strong>: from the car park the lake loop is flat and short; from Tonadico you can walk up past Castel Pietra.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Malga Canali<\/strong>: at the head of Val Canali, on a forest road with little climbing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lake Calaita<\/strong>: an easy loop round the lake, fine for children.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mezzano and its woodpiles<\/strong>: a village stroll, good even when the weather is uncertain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Hike to Rifugio Treviso<\/h3>\n<p>From the Val Canali road you climb to Rifugio Treviso\u2013Canali (1,631 m) in about two hours, on a marked trail through forest and scree with views of the Pale walls. You need some fitness, but it is not technical. From the hut, harder routes lead up to the Pale plateau: only for experienced hikers.<\/p>\n<h3>Getting around Val Canali in summer<\/h3>\n<p>In summer 2026 a bus ran from Primiero to Val Canali from late June to early September, seven return trips a day, twice as often in August. Car parks in the valley are paid from mid-June to mid-September, overnight parking is banned and a stretch of road towards Piereni is closed to private cars. In August car access is limited: once the car parks at the head of the valley are full, the road is closed.
