It is the main village of the Valle Spluga, the valley that climbs from Chiavenna to the Splügen Pass (Passo dello Spluga) and the Swiss border. It has around 500 residents, four hamlets (Madesimo, Pianazzo, Isola and Montespluga) and an odd record: it is the Italian municipality furthest from the sea.

Driving distances, according to the local tourist board (Consorzio Turistico): Chiavenna 20 km, Campodolcino 6 km, Lecco 85 km, Como 104 km, Lugano 117 km, Milan 139 km, Zurich 191 km over the Splügen. From the airports: Bergamo Orio al Serio 124 km, Milan Linate 142 km, Milan Malpensa 173 km. Without a car, take the train to Chiavenna and the connecting bus up the valley.

Why go: in winter you get the Skiarea Valchiavenna, with runs that start in the village and reach Alpe Motta, lifts you can walk to and 2026/27 lift pass prices already published. In summer you get Lake Emet, Pizzo Tambò, trails into Switzerland and the Via Spluga, the old mule track over the pass. One thing to know: for the 2026/27 season the Groppera cable car, the one that served the famous Canalone, stays closed.

What to see in Madesimo

The village and the Scalcoggia stream

Madesimo is a compact village built around the Scalcoggia stream. The centre is a limited traffic zone (ZTL) and you get around on foot. Here you find the church of Santi Pietro e Paolo, the Infopoint on Via Alle Scuole, the indoor ice rink and the bottom station of the Larici gondola. On Piazza Bertacchi there is a giant chessboard free to use.

Tourism has deep roots here: the mineral springs are documented from 1612, and the poet Giosuè Carducci spent several summers here in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Giro d’Italia finished stages in Madesimo in 1965 and 1987.

The Pianazzo and Catino waterfalls

Below Madesimo the Scalcoggia drops into the valley in two waterfalls. The Catino falls take their name from the basin-shaped rock carved by the water. The Pianazzo waterfall is the highest in the Valle Spluga; you see it from the viewpoint above the hamlet of Pianazzo (1,400 m).

You walk there on the old road to Pianazzo, closed to cars: 1.3 km and 150 metres of descent from the village centre. It works in winter too.

The Andossi plateau

Above the village to the east lies the limestone plateau of the Andossi: pastures, clusters of stone huts and the little chapel of San Rocco. In summer you cross it on foot or by bike; in winter it is the area for snowshoes, fat bikes and snowmobiles.

The easiest path follows the stream, crosses a Roman bridge and climbs onto the plateau: 2.2 km and 159 metres of ascent. Part of the plateau is reserved for snowmobiles, so stay on the marked routes.

Alpe Motta and the Madonna d’Europa

Alpe Motta (about 1,720 m) is a balcony over the valley. It belongs to Campodolcino but is only minutes from Madesimo. Here you find slopes, mountain huts, the cross-country loop and the large gilded statue of the Madonna d’Europa, put up in 1957. From Motta you can walk on to Lago Azzurro: another 1.8 km and 140 metres of ascent.

From Madesimo you get there on foot along the Motta road (1.93 km, 165 metres of ascent), by the free shuttle or by lift. From Campodolcino, the Sky Express underground funicular takes about 3 minutes.

Pizzo Tambò

The mountain that dominates the village is Pizzo Tambò, 3,279 metres, on the Swiss border. It is the highest peak in the Valle Spluga and is called the “king of the Valchiavenna”.

The normal route starts at the Italian customs house on the Splügen Pass and follows the east ridge. There are no paint marks, only cairns, and the final section is on rock and scree. It is a climb for experienced hikers in stable weather; if you don’t know the terrain, hire a mountain guide.

Montespluga and its lake

Montespluga is the highest hamlet in the municipality, at 1,908 metres, about 3 km below the pass. It is a small old customs village with the church of San Francesco (1825) and a large reservoir, Lago di Montespluga, built in the 1930s.

In summer it is the base for Lake Emet, Lago Nero, the Suretta and Val Loga bivouacs and Pizzo Tambò. In winter the flat ground by the dam is popular with snowkiters. Montespluga is mainly a summer destination: in winter, ask the Infopoint about access.

The Splügen Pass

The pass, at 2,117 metres, links the Valle Spluga with the Rheinwald and the Swiss village of Splügen. The Roman road between Milan and Lake Constance already ran this way; today it is the SS36, the road that starts in Milan.

The road is usually open from May until autumn and closes with the snow. For autumn 2026 there is a restriction: since 14 October the Swiss side is closed from 7am to 5pm and the summer bus stops at Montespluga. Check the pass status on the Graubünden roads site, strassen.gr.ch.

Isola and the Cardinello gorge

Isola is the hamlet on the valley floor below Madesimo, with a small lake and the church of Santi Giorgio e Martino. It was the original seat of the municipality.

From Isola starts one of the best trails in the valley: the mule track through the Cardinello gorge, climbing narrowly between rock walls up to Montespluga. It is a section of the Via Spluga, the old merchants’ route.

Campodolcino and the Via Spluga museum

Campodolcino, 6 km down the valley, is Madesimo’s twin village in the ski area. The Mu.Vi.S., the Museum of the Via Spluga and Val San Giacomo, is housed in the old town hall and tells the story of valley life and centuries of trade and travel over the pass.

Skiing in Madesimo

Madesimo is part of the Skiarea Valchiavenna, which links the village with Alpe Motta and Campodolcino. For winter 2025/26 the tourist board gave about 40 km of runs: 20 blue, 16 red and 3 black, one of them FIS-approved. Many sites quote 58 or 60 km: don’t rely on that. The practical advantage is that the lifts start in the village and you walk to them, no ski bus needed.

2026/27 season, what changes: according to the Skiarea, the Groppera cable car and the Val di Lei chairlift are closed for the whole season, as are the Caurga and Reno Val di Lei runs. That leaves 11 lifts and 37 runs, with the top point at about 2,240 metres (Serenissima chairlift). A new cable car to Pizzo Groppera and the Val di Lei is planned, but its opening date is not yet official.

The sectors to know:

Larici: the 8-seat gondola leaves from the centre and climbs to about 1,900 metres. The Baby Park is at the top.

Arlecchino and Palù: beginner runs.

Montalto and Pianello: the floodlit run for night skiing.

Alpe Motta: Motta, Lago Azzurro and Serenissima chairlifts, wide runs, linked to Campodolcino by the Sky Express.

Italo Pedroncelli and Piani: training and race runs.

The Canalone

The Canalone made Madesimo’s name: an off-piste descent down the couloir from Pizzo Groppera, considered one of the finest and toughest in the Alps. In 1965 the writer Dino Buzzati called it, in the Corriere della Sera, the most beautiful run in the Alps. In 2026/27, with the Groppera cable car closed, you can’t reach it by lift. Either way it is off-piste: go only with a mountain guide, avalanche gear and after reading the ARPA Lombardia avalanche bulletin.

Lift passes 2026/27

The official price list runs from 27 November 2026 to 4 April 2027, with three periods. An adult day pass costs €41 in pre-season, €56 in low season and €59 in high season. An adult 6-day pass costs €197, €255 or €290. The Made Park, at 1,800 metres, is supervised, free and has features for beginners. Madesimo has two ski and snowboard schools, plus another at Alpe Motta. Note: in Italy helmets are compulsory on the slopes for everyone, at any age.

Cross-country, snowshoeing and more

The cross-country loop of about 5 km is at Alpe Motta: free access, snowmaking and heated changing rooms. For snowshoeing there are two routes marked with green poles: from Madesimo to Alpe Andossi (about 1h30–2h, about 200 m, easy) and from Isola along the old mule track (about 1h30–2h, about 250 m, moderate).

Also: 70 km of snowmobile tracks on the Andossi, ski touring, heli-skiing, fat biking and ice skating.
